How Much Does Local SEO Cost in 2026? Honest Numbers for Small Businesses

If you've asked three SEO agencies for a quote, you've probably gotten three wildly different numbers and no explanation. Here's the honest version: for most small businesses, real local SEO costs $500 to $1,000 a month. Less than that usually buys you very little actual work. A lot more is only justified in brutally competitive markets. Let's break down what each price band gets you — and how to avoid paying for smoke.

The going rate, according to agencies themselves

The best public data comes from SE Ranking's agency pricing survey, which asked agencies — most of them serving small and local businesses — what they actually charge. The most common monthly retainer lands between $500 and $1,000, and monthly retainers are the most popular pricing model overall.

So if someone quotes you $3,000 a month for a single-location business, they're pricing well above what most of the industry charges. That's not automatically a scam — but they should be able to explain exactly what the extra money buys.

What you get at each price band

Under $500/mo: maintenance, not growth

At this level you're typically getting software-assisted basics: some Google Business Profile updates, directory listings, maybe a monthly report generated by a tool. That can be fine if your market is small and you just need upkeep. But nobody is writing content, building local pages, or earning links for you at $300 a month — the hours simply aren't in the budget. Be especially wary of large agencies with $99 plans; that price pays for a dashboard, not a person.

$500-$1,000/mo: the working range

This is where legitimate month-over-month progress happens for most local businesses: ongoing Google Business Profile management, a review-generation system, local landing pages for your services and service areas, citation cleanup, and reporting tied to calls and direction requests — not just rankings. Expect meaningful movement in three to six months, not three weeks.

$1,000-$2,500+/mo: competitive markets

Multiple locations, brutal niches (think personal injury law or big-city HVAC), or aggressive content and link-building programs push budgets here. The work is real at this level too — just make sure your market actually requires it before you sign.

One-time audits: $500 to $2,000

Not ready for a retainer? A one-off audit or project is a sensible first step. In the same SE Ranking survey, 66% of agencies price projects under $2,000, with $500-$2,000 the most common range. A good audit tells you exactly what's broken — your Google Business Profile, your site, your reviews, your citations — and gives you a prioritized list you could even work through yourself.

Red flags that should end the conversation

  • "Page 1 in 30 days, guaranteed." Nobody controls Google. Guaranteed rankings are either a lie or a trick (ranking you for a search phrase nobody uses).
  • They won't give you access to your own data. You should have owner access to your Google Business Profile and Google Search Console. If an agency holds your accounts hostage, walk.
  • "Proprietary secret methods." Real local SEO is unglamorous, explainable work. Secrecy usually hides the fact that nothing is being done.
  • No monthly reporting, or reports that only show rankings. You want calls, direction requests, and website leads — the numbers that pay your bills.
  • Long lock-in contracts before any results. Month-to-month or 90-day initial terms are fair. Twelve-month lock-ins with cancellation fees protect them, not you.

The new layer: showing up in AI search

Here's what's changed since older pricing guides were written: your customers aren't only searching Google anymore. They're asking ChatGPT and Perplexity "who's the best plumber near me?" — and Google itself now answers many searches with AI Overviews before anyone sees a map pack. Being cited and recommended by these AI answers is becoming part of the job. The work overlaps with classic local SEO — consistent business information, strong reviews, real content that answers real questions — but it's a layer worth asking any provider about in 2026. If they've never thought about it, they're behind.

Where our pricing lands

For transparency: our Local SEO & AI Visibility program starts at $500 a month — the bottom of that working range on purpose, priced for single-location small businesses. It covers Google Business Profile management, a reviews engine, local landing pages and citations, plus the AI-search visibility work most agencies haven't added yet, with plain-English monthly reporting on calls and direction requests. It's an ongoing program, and it pairs well with a fast, well-built website — SEO can't fix a site nobody wants to land on. For trades and home-service businesses, local visibility is usually the single highest-leverage marketing spend there is.

How to verify any provider is actually working

  1. 1Keep owner access to everything. Google Business Profile, Google Search Console, your website. Grant the agency manager access; never hand over ownership.
  2. 2Check Search Console yourself monthly. Five minutes: are impressions and clicks trending up over a 3-6 month window?
  3. 3Ask for a work log. What was actually done this month — pages published, citations fixed, reviews generated? Deliverables, not vibes.
  4. 4Watch the numbers that matter. Calls from your profile, direction requests, form fills. Rankings are a means, not the end.
  5. 5Give it a fair window, then decide. Local SEO compounds; three to six months is a fair trial. Zero movement after six months with no explanation is your answer.
